Ebook About Virginia patriot and jurist John Marshall wrote the first authorized biography of George Washington, Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army, first President of the United States, and Father of His Country. Published and sold by subscription from 1804 through 1807, Marshall’s Life of Washington is a 3,200 page door-stop, more history than biography, and a work Thomas Jefferson privately considered “a five volumed libel."When George Washington died in 1799, he left his heirs an impressive estate, including his home at Mount Vernon, significant land holdings, commercial interests, and the material evidence of an active and prosperous life. Among his worldly effects were his public and private papers, materials documenting the American Revolution which he considered “a species of Public property, sacred in my hands.” Washington’s papers were part of his bequest to nephew Bushrod Washington, then an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court. Bushrod, realizing in this bequest a sense of responsibility to posterity as well as a potentially lucrative financial opportunity, soon set to work in securing a biographer to write the life of the Founding Father. There were considerations to be made in the selection of an author. First of all, he should be someone who could be entrusted to preserve with all due reverence both the Washington family name and the memory of a national hero. The evolving political climate and Bushrod’s own leanings also bade his preference for a Federalist. And no small sense of familial heritage likely prejudiced his choice for a Virginian. Writing ability was perhaps a lesser consideration, but would of course prove important; indeed, Bushrod initially considered writing the biography himself in concert with Washington’s long-time secretary Tobias Lear. But Lear’s recent stewardship of Washington’s diaries had come into question over perceived gaps in the collection, and his allegiances now appeared to be shifting toward Thomas Jefferson’s Democratic-Republican Party. On a more practical level, Bushrod’s eyesight was waning, he perhaps doubted his own writing abilities, and he by now had a realistic understanding of the burdens of the bench, all factors which must have made him wary of assuming the task of biographer. Still anxious to proceed, he turned to his friend John Marshall of Virginia, a man whose patriotism, energy, political adroitness, and life-long loyalty to Washington were beyond reproach. The biographical enterprise taken up by John Marshall with his friend Bushrod Washington proved less successful than they had hoped. Only about seven thousand sets of the Life of Washington were eventually sold. Nevertheless, all partied involved fared well financially, and throughout his later years Marshall regularly contemplated publication of a revised edition of the Life of Washington. Marshall’s long-standing friendship with Bushrod weathered their joint publishing experience, and they remained staunch allies throughout their tenure on the Supreme Court, where Marshall’s vigorous defense of the Constitution reigned until 1835.Book John Marshall on George Washington: An Episode in American Political Biography Review :
